Winter Rides Again
Saturday, January 30th, 2010Freezing rain and sleet pretty much all day Thursday. Snow all day yesterday. And we have this again:

There’s quite a bit of snow out there. Don’t have the huge drifts like we did before, it’s pretty even. Dogs are not happy - they assume the position to do their business and get snow on their butts.
Of course our heater is now on the fritz. Jim talked with our heat and air guy and he thinks it sounds like the flame sensor is dirty - which actually makes perfect sense with what it’s doing. Jim is going to try to clean it once it’s got time to cool off, hopefully we’ll avoid an emergency service call bill.
So, left work early Thursday because of the ice - could have stayed most of the day, the roads didn’t turn bad until later, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. They closed the center yesterday, and while I’ve got lots of work to do, I wasn’t about to go in. I also got new tires on Wednesday, which I really needed. The way they wore the outer edges looked OK, but the center was pretty slick. The car feels much more secure now.
So what does one do when home because of bad weather? Well duh - one knits. And reads. And plays computer games. I’m still working on the Swing Coat, and it’s still terribly cute. Got the sleeves finished yesterday. Instead of doing the stair stepped bind offs on the underarm shaping, I short rowed them and did a 3-needle bind off. I’d much rather knit than sew. It will make setting them a bit more difficult under the arm, but the trade off is worth it for me.
Side pieces knit:

And joined:

They smooth out beautifully once they’re blocked.
So I’m finally ready to start on the bodice of the sweater. I gathered my various sizes of needles (had three different brands/materials in the right sizes, so it’s easy to see which one to grab) and picked up the skirt to start working on it. Realized something didn’t look quite right about the bottom. Got out the book (I make a working copy of the pattern and keep it with the project) and studied the photos a bit. I screwed up. The little fill miters along the bottom edge have a bit of a pattern to them, and I just did them in stripes. So, six little bits to rip and reknit. The one on the left is messed up, the right is correct.

Luckily they’re pieces that don’t have anything else picked up and worked from them. Otherwise - I would have left them and called it artistic interpretation.
We can sure tell the difference in the dogs coats when it’s snowing out. Brandi comes in a bit damp because she’s got a short, single layer coat. Rhett? He comes in looking like a snow man because of his double coat.

Hope everyone is warm and safe.
